Is It Time To Replace Your Air Conditioner?

Posted on June 29, 2021 by oozle

replacing air conditioner

An air conditioner does more than just keep your home cool. It also filters out dust and pollen to improve your indoor air quality. Most homes and buildings in Las Vegas have one or more of the common types of AC units, such as:

  • Central Air Conditioners: These are the most common types of air conditioners found in homes today. They rely on an outside unit that absorbs and filters hot air, cools it, and releases it into a home through vents and air ducts.
  • Ductless: These cool your home the same way as central air conditioners but through a wall-mounted indoor unit.
  • Portable: These can be moved from room to room and absorb outdoor air through a hose that runs through a window or sometimes through a wall or drop ceiling.

Although there are many different types of air conditioning systems, they will all wear down and require replacements over time. In fact, the average life of an air conditioner unit or system is about 10-15 years. However, if a system is not well-maintained or it has any mechanical issues, it could suddenly stop working.

So, how do you know when to replace your air conditioner before it breaks?

Let’s discuss the common signs that your AC unit needs to be replaced

1. Odd Noises or Smells

If you hear any grinding, high-pitched squealing, or scraping coming from your air conditioner unit, it could be a sign that the belt is out of place. When you hear an odd sound and contact professional help early, an AC technician may be able to simply replace the belt. However, if it goes unaddressed for too long, a misplaced belt can cause major internal damage to your unit—requiring you to get a replacement.

A strange smell coming from your AC could be another sign that your system is nearing its end and needs to be replaced. If your unit gives off a burning odor, you might have burned-out wires, which can sometimes be repaired.

A musty odor coming from your AC means there is likely mold growing inside. A moldy air conditioner can also lead to poor indoor air quality and health issues such as allergies and respiratory illnesses. Mold is nearly impossible to remove once it starts growing inside your air conditioner, so you will need to replace your unit to keep everyone in your home safe.

2. Your Air Quality is Decreasing

A good AC unit is designed to purify the air and improve overall air quality by filtering out dust, allergens, odors, and other pollutants.  So, if you notice higher amounts of dust collecting throughout your home, it could be a sign that your AC unity is working less efficiently.

An increase in indoor air humidity in your home is another indication that your AC unit is not working correctly. A functional air conditioner should be able to filter out moisture and humidity inside your home.

If your family is experiencing any symptoms of air quality issues, contact an AC repair service right away. Poor air quality can cause allergy flareups or symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, or even trouble breathing. If this issue is caused by the AC unit, it is highly recommended that you get it replaced.

3. Moisture or Leaking Around Your Unit

The chemical Freon is used as a coolant in most AC units. Although Freon is harmless when it’s contained in your unit, it’s not something you want to escape. This chemical is poisonous and can cause frostbite, loss of consciousness, and sometimes even death.

Freon can escape through a leak in your AC unit. To be safe, you should call a technician as soon as you notice a leak or moisture coming from your air conditioner. A technician can also diagnose whether water leaks and condensation in your unit are a sign of a broken or clogged tube.

Additionally, if your unit requires R-22 instead of Freon, it is time for it to be replaced. R-22 is an outdated coolant chemical that was used in many older air conditioner units. In fact, you are no longer allowed to use R-22 due to its ozone-depleting agents.

4. Your Energy Bills are Skyrocketing

If your energy use habits haven’t changed but your energy bills have increased, your AC unit could be to blame. Older AC units are simple not as energy efficient and their efficiency will also decrease over time.

If your energy bills seem to be getting higher every summer, it’s time to consider a better option. Many newer AC units are Energy Star rated, which means they had to meet federal EPA guidelines regarding efficient energy consumption. A new air conditioning system will help you consume less energy and save money on your monthly electric bills.
